Sustainable practices
One of the courses I took while studying abroad in Ecuador was a course in sustainable practices. Naturally, we took full advantage of our surroundings, and the bulk of our work was fieldwork. We constructed composting toilets, built a bamboo house, and designed two different aquaponics systems. For our final projects, we documented these projects in groups. My group’s project, documenting the aquaponics systems, is a website describing the basics of aquaponics, the two major designs, and the process of creating these systems.
It was refreshing to be able to study something outside of my major, especially because I am so interested in environmental science and the outdoors but just hadn’t had a chance to dive into this discipline. This project, and the class as a whole, opened my eyes and my mind to future possibilities, even if I never go into a career in sustainable practices. I hope to make sustainable practices a part of my daily life, and to build an aquaponics system again one day, whether it be in my backyard or somewhere else in my community.
